Chess Game
A JavaFX-based chess application developed as part of the CSC 413 course project. The game demonstrates object-oriented programming principles, interactive UI design, and advanced gameplay features. It reimagines traditional chess by introducing unique variants such as Drook, Amazon, and Chess960, while also integrating the powerful Stockfish engine for AI-driven gameplay. The project balances classic chess rules with innovative twists, offering multiplayer options, AI opponents, and variant gameplay modes. It highlights technical proficiency in Java programming, game state management, AI integration, and the ability to adapt complex rules into a polished 2D interface after iterative development attempts in 3D. Ultimately, the project provides a challenging, feature-rich experience for casual players and enthusiasts alike, with an emphasis on smooth animations, responsive design, and rich strategic depth.
Note: Documentation is available; a live demo is not hosted for this project.

Project Features
Innovative Chess Variants
Introduces custom chess variants to enrich gameplay. The Drook, a rook-like piece limited to moving only two squares, forces players to rethink traditional strategies. The Amazon, combining the powers of a queen and knight, adds versatility and unpredictability. Chess960 randomizes starting positions, eliminating memorized openings and encouraging creative play from the start.
Multiplayer & Single-Player Modes
Supports both local multiplayer matches and single-player experiences against the Stockfish AI engine. Multiplayer allows direct human competition, while the AI bot provides scalable challenges, adapting difficulty to player skill levels for engaging and rewarding gameplay.
Stockfish-Powered AI
Integrates the Stockfish engine to simulate realistic, challenging opponents. The AI is capable of delivering accurate moves, simulating different difficulty levels, and providing strong opposition for players who want to practice or improve without human counterparts.
Polished 2D Game Interface
Built with JavaFX after pivoting from an ambitious but challenging 3D approach. The final interface features smooth animations, dynamic board updates, and intuitive controls, ensuring a visually appealing and accessible game. The decision to refine a 2D experience reflects adaptability and a focus on delivering quality gameplay.
